The media goes into overdrive, and we can expect speculation to increase in the run up to an appointment.
But you know what?
I don't really care. Well I do really really care, but I don't. Well you know what I mean.
I mean, I'd love Gordon Strachan to get the job. I'm not going to renew my season ticket. Not for any political protest reasons, but I just amnae. But if Gordon was appointed, I would find that money by hook or by crook. But he's not so it's hypothetical.
So who will get the job? Early reports suggested that John Robertson would be highly considered by the Hibs board. But he had a long and distinguished career at Hearts. Worse still I think he has a Hearts tattoo. That doesnae bother me, but it bothers a large section of the Hibs support. Even some of the people who I consider to be the most rational and reasonable people take offence at that.
In the Scottish first division there are a pair of highly rated candidates. They are well respected by the supporters of other clubs in division one and they are Alan Kernaghan & John Connolly. If I had to make a choice outwith Strachan it would be Kernaghan. He has quietly got about his business at Clyde, and is all set to top his second place last season with a championship winning side this season. He's young, I guess he will be ambitious, and almost unnoticed he's on the brink of taking Clyde to a ground share with Kilmarnock next season in the SPL. Clyde have never made it to the SPL in the 29 years of its various existences so surely that is worth something? Surely the guy has got something?
John Connolly is more interesting. Interesting in that Queen of the South are part time. Yes, he's been relatively successful with them, but you are talking about a whopping step up to work with full time players. Would he cut that? It's a simple answer: we don't know. Just like with any of the other names mentioned above. It's a risk. Bobby Williamson was probably the best candidate at the time, but he's not taken us forward. Well maybe he has, in terms of team development, but he has not managed to secure a top six finish in two attempts. Yes he has had severe constraints to work under. No it was not a particularly impressive achievement. Would Strachan be the answer? We just don't know. There are no guarantees are there?
But where will the new manager come from? Will it come from the Scottish leagues? There's no really an abundance of candidates that shout "come and get me, I'll do great things" are there? Davie Hay is possibly the only contender that is earning his money in the SPL. Does he have a stunning CV? Perhaps, he led Livvy to cup glory this season. Did they put either of the Old Firm out along the way? That would be no, we did all the hard work. He's also of a different generation. A safe pair of hands. Does he scream out as an obvious leader of a Brave New Hibby World? No. He would be yet another safe pair of hands. I've seen it all before.
So I've said Kernaghan would be my choice (Strachan notwithstanding). Why? He won 26 caps for the Republic of Ireland, he's still played regularly for Clyde this season making 25 appearances. Of his games in charge, of which there have been 94, Clyde have won 48 lost 22 and drawn the remaining 24. Furthermore, a lot of first division fans have been impressed with Clyde over the past two seasons.
He also had this to say on the matter: "This is about the fifth job I've been linked with this season and I haven't heard anything concrete about any of them. The only thing I've heard about during my time at Clyde was the Inverness job when that came up.
"Inverness contacted the club who then asked me and I said no. That was the first and only approach I've had. After that there have been rumours about St.Johnstone, Partick Thistle, Livingston, Plymouth and now Hibs.
"I've heard nothing about it so I can't comment."
Like I said, there are no obvious jump up and bite you candidates, currently employed in the Scottish Leagues. But If I was to choose one, it would be Kernaghan.
PS Did you know Alan Kernaghan turns 37 on Sunday? Not that it's important, just a useless bit of trivia.
