On this day in Hibstory - May 6th: Hibs lose Scottish Cup to Celtic Print E-mail

ImageThis was perhaps the day we lost the 2001 Scottish Cup Final. After a wonderful season we capitulated in front of the sky cameras 5-2 at Easter Road. In fact we had been 5-0 down before Marc Libbra (he did like to score against Celtic) restored some respectability with two goals in the last five minutes.

The boring and often quoted line in the media is that Hibs were rubbish after the winter break in 2000-2001. That is simply bollocks. We were rubbish when Franck Sauzee wasnae playing, as this game shows. In the 35 games he played up until this game we lost but a mere three: At Parkhead 3-0, at home to Aberdeen of all teams 2-0 and at Ibrox on boxing day 1-0. In this period we drew twice with Celtic (once away and once at home), and beat and drew with Rangers.

The Hibs team v Celtic 2001 was: Colgan, Smith, Sauzee, Lehmann, Lovell, Latapy, Jack (Arpinon), O'Neil, Murray, Libbra, Paatelainen (Zitelli). Marc Libbra scored two late goals, after some huddy called Didier Agathe was sent off. The attendance that day was 8728 as the west stand was being redeveloped.

Back in 2000, we lost 2-0 at Motherwell, which presumably would have impressed the Motherwell fans who hated our then manager as much as we hate him now. The Hibs team that day was: Colgan, Hughes, McIntosh, Smith (Lovering), Lovell (Renwick), Murray, McGinlay, Hartley, Lehmann, Miller (Earl Jean - mind of him?), Paatelainen. The crowd was an enthralled 5426.

Back in 1995, we defeated Hearts 3-1. Anyone who was at this game will remember it because it was at a time when the ground was being redeveloped and both stands behind the goals were out of commission. Hearts had taken an early lead before Hibs scored three times in seven minutes. Hearts were fighting to avoid the drop which they ultimately did do thanks to a shameful deal with Partick Thistle in one of their later games.

Back in 1972 we lost the Scottish Cup Final, an Alan Gordon goal being one of the few highlights before we caved into a 6-1 tanking by Celtic. Not to worry we would have our day against Celtic, back at Hampden later on in the year by lifting the League Cup in December.
