Daniel heads off into the sunset
Back in February 2003, Bobby Williamson pulled off a bit of a surprise when he signed a Swedish International goalkeeper to replace Tony Caig, who had been allowed to leave Hibs to join Newcastle. Little was known of the goalkeeper back then, as he had never ventured outside of his homeland to play previously.
What little we did manage to glean was from the manager and the goalkeeper at the time he signed. Bobby Williamson: "Daniel comes highly recommended and I am pleased to have secured his services. Following the departure of Tony Caig to Newcastle, Daniel is an important addition to the squad and we look forward with working with him. I know that Daniel had other options and we are pleased that he has chosen Hibernian."
Daniel Andersson: "Once I had spoken with Hibernian, then the interest from PAOK and Sturm Graz did not seem so appealing.. Scottish football has a great history and the supporters have a real passion for the game that you do not find in many other countries. I really like the aggressive style of football and I think it will suit me. There’s a great stadium and atmosphere at Hibernian and the club is in a solid position in the league."
"It’s a great new challenge for me and I can guarantee the club they have a very hard-working and ambitious goalkeeper. I have one cap for Sweden, against Finland in 2001, and being involved with the national side again is certainly something I am hoping for. The coach knows my ability and what kind of player I am, so it is up to myself to get into the Hibs team and play as well as I can. Both Magnus Hedman and Johan Mjallby also used to play for AIK, so I know all about them. It will be great when we play Celtic because, of course, they also have Henrik Larsson and he is the best possible advert for Swedish players moving to Scotland."
"I have heard very positive things about the Club and like what I have seen. I am delighted to have signed and I look forward to playing for Hibernian."
So that was that bit sorted then, he at least said all the right things. Now that he has left, what was the verdict? Well, he was pretty good actually. Some might attest that he wasnae really an improvement on Nick Colgan (who was popular with a section of the fans) but I would disagree with that assessment.
He was a fine shot stopper. He did come for crosses, although, perhaps unsurprisingly, he shared a similar trait with many European goalkeepers in that he wasnae shy in punching a ball if he felt he wasnae going to get two hands on it. I didnae have a problem with that personally. He seemed able to organise his defence well, but he suffered as the defence was often struggling in front of him.
His original contract expired in January, and although he extended it to the end of the season, back then he had already been linked with a move back to Sweden to Helsingborg. It was not much of a surprise that he has now headed backed there on a three year deal, perhaps he wanted more money than Hibs were able to provide.
It was perhaps somewhat surprising he started last season in the (now metaphorical) number 1 jersey ahead of another Scandinavian recruit, Danish under 21 goalkeeper, Morten Hyldgaard. What was less surprising was that he has retained the jersey, due to his solid performances. In one home match with Motherwell, we might have been half a dozen down before half time but for his heroics. He also performed admirably in our league win over the scumbos.
He made his debut back in March 2003 at Parkhead, and played well that day too, Hibs losing out in injury time 3-2. The abiding memory of many Hibs fans though will be his performance in the penalty shoot out in the semi final victory over the Huns. He deserved a cup winners medal after that. If only you got winners medals because you deserved them.
