About |
"It was a big win for us, particularly with the way
other results went at the weekend, but maybe 3-0 flattered us a bit. I thought
we played well in patches, in fact I felt we were awesome at times, but at other
times we were poor. No-one in the dressing room has started talking about Europe
- we still have another 15 games to go and a lot can still happen."
"If we keep producing performances like we did against Killie then we will be
okay but in the last ten minutes we got a bit casual and slack and that’s when
things can go wrong. On another day we might have been punished. But I am sure
the gaffer will keep us going in the right direction. We have to keep going, we
cannot get ahead of ourselves because we have done nothing yet."
"We’ve put a bit more pressure on Aberdeen but we have to keep winning our own
games and whatever anyone else does won’t bother us. We want to stay in third
place so we have to keep our feet on the ground, go to Motherwell on Saturday
and try to win again."
Caldwell, too, has his eyes on an international call-up from Smith having
amassed 13 caps under his predecessor Berti Vogts and he believes Hibs’
scorching form could see a number of his team-mates pleasantly surprised.
He said: "Hopefully I’ll be in the squad but I have to do my job for Hibs first.
I’m fit, I’ve played in a few games this season and hopefully Walter will feel I
merit a place. And if chosen I’ll obviously be trying to do my best. There could
be a few of us in the squad."
"It would be recognition of the fact we are playing well as a team, we have a
lot of young Scottish players in the side and I don’t think the talent we have
would go amiss. Derek showed how good he is against Kilmarnock. It looked as if
he could have scored from anywhere because he is on fire at the moment. Both
Derek and Garry gave the Killie defence all sorts of problems."
"Even in training Derek is superb; he looks awesome at times but he has to keep
that going. Derek has two amazing feet, he can shoot with either but he is only
22 and still has a lot to learn. He can get bigger, become more physical and
hopefully he can stay here for a long time. I feel, though, that a lot of credit
has to go to Garry. He did all the donkey work against Killie, he worked hard
and ran them ragged."
"They are a great partnership and have scored a lot of goals. Others have also
chipped in and we look dangerous when we go forward. It was a great crowd on
Saturday and hopefully they will keep coming back to support us. It’s good for
the club - the more that come the more money is generated and better players can
come in and play for us."
"Everyone looks at the team above them in the table, we are third so we are
looking at second. There’s a big gap this season but hopefully in the years to
come we can close that gap and get in among the Old Firm."
Mowbray’s youngsters have grabbed the headlines this season, but Caldwell also
had a word of praise for one of the few "older" heads at the club, 33-year-old
Gary Smith having come in for the last three matches in which Hibs haven’t
conceded a goal.
He said: "Gary’s experience has showed. He’s come in and helped us and long may
it continue."
