The fallout from Spain continued this week as racism continues to dominate the national, as well as football, headlines.
Monday 22 November
St.Mirren ban two corporate guests after they are alleged to have racially abused visiting Raith Rovers players at Love Street.
Gerry McNee goes into rant overdrive on Scotsport as he rips the Old Firm apart for their “lip service” to anti-sectarianism. He hit the nail on the head when he suggested the Scottish Executive get the chairmen round the table to sort out the problem. Sod that, send them off to the Mid-Atlantic League pronto.
Tuesday 23 November
A Dundee supporter was found guilty of racially abusing two Celtic players. A 14-year old boy reported the season ticket holder. He is to be banned from Dens Park for life.
Wednesday 24 November
"We should guard against broad generalisations that stereotype our fans as racist bigots," said Rangers chairman David Murray. "This is not acceptable. The vast majority of our supporters are decent, respectable people.” "And it would be wrong for me for just to sit back and allow them to be condemned in this way."
Celtic manager Martin O'Neill claimed midfielder Neil Lennon was subjected to verbal abuse of a "racial and sectarian manner" during Saturday's derby.
"Both clubs should appreciate their responsibility in ensuring safety and fair play, irrespective of the result," continued Murray.
Tit for tat, blah blah blah, they started it, yawn yawn yawn, ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzz……
Another gallant (dull) performance from Celtic in Barcelona as their backs-to-the-wall (we were torn apart) play gets them their first away point in the Champions League.
Thursday 25 November
UEFA announce they are to investigate alleged incidents during Tuesday night’s Champions League encounter between Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen. Several home fans were seen on camera making Nazi salutes and racist chants towards Leverkusen’s black players.
Jason Perryman is found guilty of racially aggravated disorderly behaviour towards Birmingham’s Dwight Yorke and is banned from attending matches in England and Wales until 2009. He was also fined £1,000 with £75 costs.
SPL: Livingston have parted company with Alan Preston and Alan Kernaghan. Rumours abound that Stuart Lovell may follow following remarks made about Preston. Strange, that Stuart Lovell usually keeps his opinions to himself!
SPL: The managerial merry-go-round continues as Craig Brewster is named the player-manager of Inverness Caley Thistle. Thank god, I don’t know if I could stomach seeing Craig Brown’s puss on our screens again. Already the usual suspects have been linked to the job: Richard Gough, Brown, Paul Hegarty and Maurice Malpas. Rumours that Gough is particularly keen on the youth system at Almondvale are unconfirmed.
SPL: Both Rangers and Hearts triumph in Europe and appear odds on to qualify for the next stage where they will no doubt come up against FC Decent Team.
Friday 26 November
Alan Thompson loses his appeal against trying to nut Peter Lovenkrands. Quite right too. Whilst contact may have been minimal the intent was there for all to see and Kenny Clark made the right decision. Apparently video evidence will also be used to assess the behaviour of Bob Malcolm, a bammer at the best of times, Nacho “Sly Kick” Novo and Henri Camara. And it so easily could and should have been more…
The spectre of an ex-Hibee coming back to haunt Hibs returns tomorrow as Craig Brewster’s first game in charge of Inverness Caley Thistle is at Easter Road. Fortunately, Craig cannot play due to the transfer rules. Good luck Craig (from 5pm onwards)!
So not the greatest week in football, certainly not one that will be fondly remembered in the annals of sporting history.
There are those people, even in the Hibs community, who believe that we do not have a problem with racism in Scotland. I would beg to differ and recent events have backed this up. How many other incidents go unreported?
What can you do? Report racists – if you receive racist abuse, or see or hear someone making racist comments or gestures, you should report it – to a steward or the police; to a teacher or coach; to the club if you are a fan; or to the local authority if it occurs on your local council pitch.
Racist abuse at football matches is against the law, so the police and stewards should take action.
Let’s Kick It Out. |
