Former Hibs player, Alan Reid has turned up and signed on at St Mirren. He joins former Hibees Mixu Paatelainen, Steven Woods, Kirk Broadfoot and Andy bloody Millen at Love Street.
Alan Reid. He was quite an enigma. He was a forward, a midfielder, but eventually played most of his Hibs games at left back. He even played in the CIS cup defeat by Livingston, whilst Steven Whittaker was left on the bench.
A succession of Hibs managers kept Alan Reid on the books, whilst few actually played him. That was until Bobby Williamson last season, under whom he played 20 of his 31 league appearances for Hibs. In 2003-2004 he moved from perennial end of season party show, to first team regular.
All his early appearances were further up the park, and initially he struggled at left back. To be fair though, he stuck to his task, and he looked competent enough in the position by the end of last season. It was not a great surprise that Tony Mowbray let him go after the Inter Totty cup campaign. It was quite a surprise that no other SPL side took a chance on him, although Inverness Caley Thistle had him on trial. He then moved onto St Mirren, where he merely trained with the SFL club, because they were unable to afford a contract for him. That changed this week, and he played as a trialist against Clyde on Tuesday and then against Hamilton at the weekend.
After spending 6 months training with his hometown club, he's been rewarded with a contract until the end of 2006. Good luck Alan, I remember watching you play down at Gala Fairydean in the summer of 2001 and thinking you were one for the future. Maybe you still can be.

About |
|
"It has been a difficult week or so with the disappointment of the cup final and then the heavy defeat by Celtic, but the boys are quite upbeat."
"We have a few important games coming up and it’s important for us to start picking up points. I know we haven’t won in a bit but it’s not been all bad because we have still been getting a lot of draws. We just have to look to turn those into wins. For me personally it’s been great just to get a run in the side. I’ve been trying just to do my best because the manager is fair and you know if you get a jersey and do well there’s a good chance you will keep it."
"The last few weeks have definitely been the highlight of my career here so far with the cup final. That was a massive occasion for me and getting a wee run of games in the first team just topped that off."
"I know how frustrating it can be just playing little bits under various managers so hopefully I’ve come in and done my bit to show I’m good enough to be in the team."
"I’ve been working hard ever since I got here to try and get in the team and now that I am I don’t want to ease up."
"When you do see people moving ahead of you in the pecking order that’s when character comes in and you just have to get your head down and work hard."
"Just because you aren’t in the team doesn’t mean you have given up or aren’t working hard. A lot of the hard work goes on behind the scenes."
"It was frustrating watching guys like Ian Murray and Tam McManus progressing ahead of me so I’ve waited for this chance and want to make the most of it. It has just made me more determined."
"These guys deserve credit for breaking into the team and there’s no doubt they’ve been an asset but I now need to make sure the next one that makes it is me."
