Hibs got back to winning ways on Saturday, after a period of indifferent form. Just in time for Christmas. Now, if we could just round a not so busy holiday period off with wins at Inverness & Kilmarnock [where Mowbs has yet to win] then we can all look forward to the most exciting league title race for a long time.
Hearts infallibility at the weekend was underlined as they meekly capitulated to a poor Rangers side who have struggled to win for months, let alone string two wins together. As Hibs demonstrated not so long ago, Rangers this season are a poor side, and how they managed to qualify from their champions league group is very probably explained by being in the right place at the right time. Hearts had a great chance to put themselves back on the title trail, but failed miserably. Their new coach is just not doing it, and there are no signs he is likely to “do it” in the coming games. The departures are going to be more interesting than the arrivals over Scumcastle way in January. “We are unbeatable”. Indeed.
Steven Fletcher capped a fine eight days for himself, by claiming his second goal in two games. His finish was perfect at Darkheid, and the composure he showed to take his early goal against Motherwell was a pure joy to watch. Fletcher has now scored 8 goals for Hibs and he’s not 19 until next February. Derek Riordan was 20 when he scored his first goal for Hibs. Gary O’ Connor’s first came three months short of his 19th Birthday. Fletcher, has “suffered” because of the high quality strikers in front of him, and would have played a lot more games for Hibs had it not been for Riordan and O’ Connor. Still, he’s now managed 49 games for Hibs. I would not bet against him marking his 50th game with a third consecutive goal. He will be huge.
Ivan Sproule. What can you say about this incredible character? Who deserves more credit? Ivan for applying himself to become the player he has, or Mowbs and Venus for moulding him from a raw talent, into a very effective sub, and then starter. The history books will note that no other visiting player has ever played at Ibrox and scored a hat trick as a sub. But he is so much more than that. He might not have scored in a while, but he’s still creating goals. Against the scummers, against Rangers, and yet again on Saturday when he set up Fletch beautifully. Why did no one take a chance on him before now? What is that Mowbs and Venus have that transformed him? |
