WILLIAMSON’S COMMENTS

"Whenever a goal comes you are grateful, especially if you can then keep it tight at the back and don’t concede. I don’t think that was one of our best performances this season for sure, and the game itself was never a classic. Thistle is never an easy venue; there were not many goalscoring opportunities and credit to our defence for working hard and the midfielders for closing their midfielders down."

"We got the break with Grant’s late goal and I am delighted with that. We want to keep winning and keep getting clean sheets and these three points are more than welcome."

"Even when Derek Riordan missed the late chance I still hoped we would get another opening. That’s three games we have won this season with late goals and that is in marked contrast to last season, mind you it is the case in football that ‘swings and roundabouts’ applies and these things tend to even themselves out."

"Thistle the victims of grand larceny"

It was hard to believe that this was the same group of players who had tested Celtic so thoroughly at Easter Road last week. Not a single one of them had anything more to offer than graft or doggedness, and it says much about their display that it was the 55th minute before travelling fans - breaking their vow of silence - felt excited enough to get off their seats and cheer a rare corner kick that came to nothing.

Prior to this, Bobby Williamson’s side had given the impression that they would gladly settle for a nil-nil in a bid to cement their mid-table position. A Gary O’Connor free kick that was easily held by Thistle goalkeeper Kenny Arthur was all that Hibs fans had to sing about in the first half. Or not, as it could be audibly ascertained.

Still, the final quarter of the match was a lot more entertaining than what had miserably preceded it, the game’s best chances created during this period. Mind you, the first of these was as a result of calamitous defending, Thistle’s Derek Whyte attempting a pass back that landed in the path of Derek Riordan. The young Hibernian striker shot straight at the goalkeeper and the same player missed another sitter moments later when he shot wide from inside the box. Dire finishing, indeed.

SUNDAY MAIL

"THANK GOD I GOT A FLUKE IN SAYS BREBNER "

HONEST Hibs hero Grant Brebner last night admitted his sensational last minute clincher was a FLUKE.

The midfielder stooped in injury time to nod home Derek Riordan's free-kick and leave sorry Jags still searching for their first win.

But Brebner later held his hands up and revealed he wasn't going for glory and was amazed when his effort landed in the goal He said: ``I didn't mean to score and I couldn't believe it when it hit the back of the net. It certainly wasn't a bullet header!

``It hit my head and shoulder and there were a lot of bodies in the way I just wanted to get something on it and try to re-direct it towards the goal. But it doesn't matter how they go in when it's the 90th minute.''

``It was great to get my first goal of the season but the most important thing was for the team to get all three points.'' The dramatic winner came as a shock in a dire game that looked sure to finish goal-less.

SUNDAY HERALD

A winning goal for Hibs in the final minute left Gerry Collins’ men still without a win this season. But yesterday’s victory for the Edinburgh side was as dreary an encounter as you would expect from the two clubs.
It was a game between two sides starved of resources who having to construct teams with players of mediocre quality. Many are clearly past their sell-by date and should be plying their trade in a lower league.

How else can such a poor example of Premier league football be explained?

BBC NEWS ONLINE

Unlucky Partick Thistle missed out on a point as Grant Brebner scored in the last minute to take all three points for Hibs.

The Jags looked to have earned a draw but they remain firmly rooted to the foot of the SPL thanks to Brebner's late header.

Partick started brightly, without really threatening the Hibs goal and, despite the home team's pressure, the visitors had the better of the early opportunities.

"GRANT SHOULDERS THE RESPONSIBILITY"

Hibs made it three consecutive wins at Partick Thistle when Grant Brebner grabbed a last minute winner. Mind you the goal will not enter Grant’s best ever list. When Derek Riordan whipped a free kick into the Thistle box Grant got a shoulder, ear and head to the ball .. but the execution mattered little. The only thing that mattered was that it was a match winning strike.
